I just bought a used iphone 2g that is unlocked. It currently has the 1.1.4 software version. Itunes wants me to update it to the 3.1.2 software version. If I do this is it going to brick my phone? Also when i plug my iphone in to my computer the applications tab isn’t showing up when I click on the iphone device. Could this be because the iphone software is so old?

yah its probably because your software is old.
if you update your iphone you will lose the jailbreak and unlock so yeah you will brick your phone because it’ll ask you to activate it…and i’m assuming you’re using tmobile.

You could update it and get someone to unlock and jailbreak it for you for the new 3.1.2 firmware.

Basicly I have herd that when you download the latest iPhone software it keeps all the old ones (therefore wasting space) so i am trying to locate them on my mac to delete the last few, do you know where/how i can find them?

Go to your home folder then…

Library/Itunes/iPhone Software Updates

That’s where iTunes keeps them.

I clicked the “Download Only” option when the prompt to download the new software came up. When I connected my iPhone I selected the “Update” button and it began downloading the software again. Anyway to bypass and let it update with the software that I already downloaded?

DO NOT JAILBREAK! it wont ruin it but you dont get your warrenty. Just buy a $ 25 sim card. I think it is called a stealth sim card. its not that expensive and you dont risk messing up your iphone.

I am trying to download the new iphone software onto my iPhone but the process requires backing the phone up and as there is limited space on my PC, it wont complete the upgrade. I dont want to delete anything from my PC. So I want to complete the install without backing up the phone. How do I do this? Thanks

So free up more space. You won’t be installing it without a backup.

If you don’t have enough room on your hard drive for the 50MB backup of your crap on your iPhone, you shouldn’t even be able to use your computer at all.

I was reading an article about just this yesterday, and if you install and updates or upgrades and things go wrong then Mac wont support your iPhone hundreds of people have updated/upgraded their phones and things have gone wrong. now can’t restore their phones to the older version operating system, because mac don’t support what they have done by updating/upgrading the software, this article was in a consumer report Magazine

so do some research before you try anything with your iPhone go to an iPhone user group and read what is being said, about being unable to use their iPhone

Is your phone locked or unlocked? Thats the problem if it is unlocked you need to download a special software. But if you have an unlocked iphone and connect it to itunes it may lock the iphone again. But it is locked you can use itunes. Itunes will sync it automatically.
